Trip 5 - Northwest

Trip 5 takes place predominantly in the Pacific Northwest, from Washington's Olympic Peninsula through Oregon to Northern California's redwoods region.

As a transistion from Trip 4, it starts with a line of fossil-focused stops from Nebraska through Wyoming and Idaho to Oregon. It just so happens that these stops follow the Oregon Trail fairly closely. If you start your trip in the Kansas City area, you will essentially follow the entire trail.

At the end of the trail, following the four fossil-focused stops, you'll find yourself in Portland, where the Oregon Brewers Festival is held the last full weekend in July.

The next stop takes you to Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo.

From Seattle, take a ferry across the Puget Sound to the Olympic Peninsula and Olympic National Park, the anchor site of Trip 5. Here, you can experience a temperate rainforest on the park's west side.

The next stop is Mt. St. Helens, in Southern Washington. This site is great for experiencing a landscape going throught biological succession, after the volcano erupted in 1980.

Then head down to Southern Oregon and Crater Lake National Park, home of one of the deepest freshwater lakes in North America.

Finally, the trip takes you to Northern California and the various Redwoods parks there. The tallest organisms in the world are a site to behold!
